Alabama Women: Portraits of Persistence

February 2020 – September 2022
Milo B. Howard Auditorium and First Floor Corridor

This exhibit in the first floor corridor was presented to mark the centennial of the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment, guaranteeing women the right to vote.

They were the reformers urging reluctant leaders to improve conditions for Alabama’s forgotten citizens: its poor, sick, and defenseless. Advocates encouraging those around them to pursue their dreams. Tireless educators pointing eager pupils toward greater opportunities and new horizons. And they were activists, stepping into the public eye—often at great personal risk to themselves and their families—to demand the hard-won freedoms to which they were entitled. By championing causes great and small across Alabama, generations of women have persisted in this noble and necessary work. To mark the centennial of women’s suffrage, the Archives presents this virtual exhibit showcasing a few of Alabama’s many remarkable, trailblazing women.
