ARCHIVES ANNOUNCES RETURN
OF ANNUAL ALABAMA IN THE MOVIES
SUMMER FILM FESTIVAL
Montgomery, AL (6/28/22) – After
a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the Alabama Department of Archives and
History (ADAH) is pleased to announce the return of its popular summer film
festival Alabama in the Movies. This four-week festival features movies with
Alabama connections. Screenings will be held every Thursday in July beginning
at 6:00 pm in the ADAH’s
air-conditioned Joseph M. Farley Alabama Power Auditorium. Admission is FREE! Concessions will be available for purchase

SCHEDULE:
Thursday, July 7: To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) This Oscar-winning film adaptation of Harper Lee’s iconic novel recounts
the childhood experiences of six-year-old Scout Finch during the Great
Depression in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama. When her father, Atticus,
a principled and respected attorney, defends a Black man falsely accused of
raping a white woman, Scout and her brother witness the horrors of racism. They
also learn valuable lessons about courage, compassion, tolerance, and
prejudice. Starring Mary Badham and Gregory Peck. Drama. Not Rated.
Thursday, July 14: Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) After an accidental encounter with
otherworldly vessels, an ordinary man follows a series of psychic clues to the
first scheduled meeting between representatives of Earth and visitors from the
cosmos. Close Encounters was filmed on location in Mobile, Bay Minette,
Fairhope, and Irvington. Drama, Sci-Fi. Rated PG.
Thursday, July 21: Forrest Gump (1994) In this Oscar-winning film, Forrest Gump, a gentle soul from a
small Alabama town, happens into one memorable experience after another through
a panorama of twentieth-century American history. Throughout his life, he is sustained
by his love for Jenny, his childhood best friend. Based on the novel by Winston
Groom. Starring Tom Hanks, Sally Field, Robin Wright Penn, and Gary Sinise.
Drama. Rated PG-13.
Thursday, July 28: 42: The True Story of an American Legend (2013) This film tells the life story of
Jackie Robinson, who became the first Black player in Major League Baseball
when he was signed to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Many of the scenes were
filmed at Birmingham’s Rickwood Field. Drama. Starring Chadwick Boseman, T. R.
Knight, and Harrison Ford. Rated PG-13.
The Alabama Department of Archives and
History is the state’s government-records repository, a special-collections
library and research facility, and home to the Museum of Alabama, the state
history museum. It is located in downtown Montgomery, directly across
Washington Avenue from the State Capitol. The Museum of Alabama is open Monday
through Saturday from 8:30 to 4:30. The EBSCO Research Room is open Tuesday
