Place: Alabama Power Auditorium, Alabama Department of Archives and History

Topic: “You Can’t Get There from Here: Alabama Maps and Travel”

Speaker: Nancy M. Rohr

Maps show us where we’ve been, where we want to go, and how to get there. Besides, in Alabama, half the fun can be getting there and seeing how the first tourists did it. Join us for “You Can’t Get There from Here: Alabama Maps and Travel” presented by Nancy M. Rohr on Thursday, October 18th, at 12 noon at the Alabama Department of Archives and History. The ArchiTreats: Food for Thought presentation will be held in the Alabama Power Auditorium.

This program is for academic navigators and armchair explorers of Alabama. The serious student of cartography can enjoy attributes of both science and art. On a different level, without leaving home, one can leisurely follow the tracks of time that unfold in the story a map offers. Both ways present the changing trail of our lives and its influence on the way we live today. Maps, paintings, and photographs of Alabama travelers allow us to watch the past unfold visually, illuminated through geology and archaeology, geography, history, social diversity, and political and economic change. The topic lends itself well to discussion about where we’ve been, how we got there, and where we might be going.
