Maury Drane Smith, born 1927, Samson, Alabama, the son of Abb Jackson Smith and Rose Drane Sellers Smith received the B.S. and L.L.B. degrees from The University of Alabama. He has served as an Assistant Attorney General of Alabama and Assistant District Attorney for Montgomery County. He began the practice of law in Montgomery with the late Senator O. J. Goodwyn under the name Goodwyn & Smith. The firm later merged and became Balch & Bingham. He has continuously practiced law in Montgomery over the past 48 years in the areas of personal injury, eminent domain, criminal law, domestic relations and commercial litigation. He is a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and of the American Bar Foundation. He served as a member of the Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama and is now a Trustee Emeritus. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Alabama Department of Archives and History. He is President of the Alabama Heritage Foundation. He is a member of the First United Methodist Church in Montgomery, the Sons of the American Revolution, and The Montgomery Kiwanis Club. He served in the Army Specialized Training Program, U.S. Infantry, 1944-1946. He is a past President of the Montgomery County Bar Association, past President of the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Alabama Bar Association, Judicial Building Task Force, Chairman, Judicial Campaign Oversight Committee for the elections of the year 2000, and a member and past Chairman Montgomery Area Committee of 100.

His wife is the former Lucile West Martin, who is a sustaining member of the Montgomery Junior League. Their children are Martha Smith Vandervoort of Anniston, Sally Smith Legg of Birmingham and Dr. Maury D. Smith, Jr. Martha attended Randolph Macon College at Lunchburg, Virginia, and received her B.S. and M.A. degrees from The University of Alabama. Sally attended Hollins College at Roanoke, Virginia, and received her B.S. degree from The University of Alabama. Maury, Jr., graduated from The University of Alabama, B.S., and received his M.D. degree from Harvard University. He is presently practicing general surgery.
