17. Salt Works

Clarke County
Clarke County is home to salt deposits that have been important throughout history. As one of the main sources of salt for the Confederacy during the Civil War,
the Clarke County salt works produced more than 600 bushels of salt each day. More than 5,000 men, mostly slaves, worked in the salt works from 1862 to 1865.
