Official Alabama State Song: Alabama

image of lyrics of song

The words of the state song, Alabama, were written by Julia S. Tutwiler. She was a famous educator and humanitarian from Alabama. The music, written by Mrs. Edna Gockel Gussen of Birmingham, was adopted by the legislature as the official state song. The bill was introduced by the Hon. Tyler Goodwyn of Montgomery, and was approved by Governor B. M. Miller.

The inspiration for the poem Alabama came to Julia Tutwiler after she returned back to Alabama from visiting and studying in Germany. She liked German patriotic songs and thought that it would be good for the people of Alabama to have a patriotic song.
