Ernest Going Williams

The following biographical sketch was compiled at the time of induction into the Academy in 1987, amended in 1998 and 2001.

Macon, Mississippi is the birth place of Ernest Going Williams, and September 24, 1915 is his birthdate. When he was five years of age, his family moved to Tuscaloosa and it is here that he attended public schools.

Mr. Williams graduated from the University of Alabama in 1938, earning a B.S. Degree in Commerce and Business Administration .

Ernest Williams served his country in the United States Navy during World War II, 1942-1945.

On August 18, 1951, Ernest G. Williams and Miss Cecil Butler were united in marriage. They are the parents of three children: Ernest Sanford, Turner Butler and Elizabeth Cecil. The Ernest Williams are also the grandparents of two children.

Mr. Williams was the retired Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Affiliated Paper Companies, Inc. He acted in this capacity since 1977. He was formerly Executive Vice President, Gulf States Paper Corporation.

Mr. Williams was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Tuscaloosa.

Ernest Williams was generous with his time and means by supporting the programs of the Jaycees, the YMCA, the United Way, and the Red Cross.

Mr. Williams was past president of Associated Industries of Alabama, a Director of the First National Bank of Tuscaloosa, a member of the board of First Southern Federal Savings and Loan Association and a director of the new Southland Life Insurance Company.

Ernest G. Williams was a trustee of the University of Alabama for thirty years.

Mr. Williams was a trustee of the David Warner Foundation.

Ernest G. Williams died on June 11, 2001.
