Of Jasper, Walker County, was born February 24, 1858, in Claiborne, Monroe County, and was the son of William Calvin Sowell, who resided at Monroeville, and wife Isabella Roberts. The parents of W. C. Sowell were James Lawrence Sowell, and wife Mary Hunley, natives of Lancaster District, S. C., but early settlers in Monroe County, and the parents of Mrs. Sowell are Thomas Lamar Roberts, of Chester District, S. C., and wife Catherine MeColl, both of whom lived in Monroe County. Mr. Sowell was educated at the common schools. In January, 1879, he was admitted to the bar, and from 1881 to 1887 was register in chancery of Monroe County. In 1887 he moved to Walker County. In 1892 he was representative in the general assembly from Walker County, from 1895 to 1900 solicitor for Walker County, in 1898 elected State senator, in August, 1900, was elected State Auditor, and in November, 1902, he was re-elected. He was a Democrat, and a Methodist. On January 17, 1894, Mr. Sowell was married to Margaret, E., daughter of John B. Lollar and wife Harriet E. Taylor, of Jasper.
Died on March 1, 1933.
