Auditor: 2007 --

S. Samantha “Sam” Shaw was born and raised in Homewood, Alabama, where she attended Homewood High School.  She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William M. “Bill” Slimp.

Sam received her first degree from Auburn University in 1979, earning a B.S. degree in Family and Child Development.  While at Auburn, Sam met Greg Shaw of Birmingham.  Sam and Greg were married in 1980 while he attended law school at Cumberland School of Law.  In 1993, Sam received a second degree in Business Administration, with a Major in Accounting, from Auburn University Montgomery.

Sam and Greg have lived in Montgomery for over 25 years, where they are members of Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church.  Greg was elected as a Judge to the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals in 2000 and was re-elected in 2006. In 2008, Judge Shaw was elected as an Associate Justice to the Alabama Supreme Court.

Sam and Greg have two sons.  Gregory is a Lieutenant in the United States Army.  He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in May of 2007.  CPT. Shaw returned to the States in March 2009, after serving a year in Iraq. He is scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan in July 2010.   The youngest Shaw, Christopher “CJ”, graduated with honors in May 2009, from Georgia Tech with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.  CJ currently is employed as an engineer with ThyssenKrupp Steel USA in Mobile.

Sam has spent most of her professional life as an accountant.  She began her accounting career at Shaw Oil Company in Birmingham.  After working in the private sector as an accountant, Sam served as the campaign manager for Greg in his 2000 and 2006 campaigns, and she was the Deputy Finance Director for Senator Jeff Sessions’ 2002 campaign.  Sam is a member of the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association, the Tallapoosa County Cattlemen’s and Cattlewomen’s Associations, the Capital City Republican Women, the Alabama Federation of Republican Women, and the Camellia Club.  Sam is also an associate member of the South Baldwin Cattlewomen’s Association, the South Baldwin Republican Women, and the Tuscaloosa Republican Women.

Sam was elected to the position of State Auditor in 2006, and assumed the duties in January 2007.  As State Auditor, Sam and her staff maintain the statewide asset management database, Protégé. To date, the Protégé system contains in excess of $1.9 Billion in State assets, which includes all equipment costing more than $500, all vehicles and all weapons.  These audits encompass locations throughout the State, in all 67 counties.  Since taking office, not only have losses of State assets been reduced by 61%, or over $217,000, but over 7,000 unrecorded items have been located during various agency property audits.  If assigned the minimum $500 value, this is approximately $3.5 Million in new assets that had previously been unrecorded.  By reducing losses, and recording new assets, the State Auditor’s Office is the best investment taxpayers have to protect their property.  The State Auditor’s Office also performs post audits between the State Treasury and the Comptroller’s Office.   As the State Auditor, Sam sits on the Board of Adjustments, where she currently serves as Chairman.
