Charles McCall

Charles Edward McCall Charles Edward McCall, of Montgomery, was born November 21, 1867, at DeSotoville. He was the son of Daniel and Nancy Elizabeth (Thompson) McCall, the former a practicing physician who graduated from the Atlanta Medical College in 1860; grandson of John and Mary (Campbell) McCall, the former a native of Scotland who came to South Carolina, later to Florida and finally settled in Choctaw County, and of Benjamin F. and Sarah Menifee (Davis) Thompson, of Hale, Autauga and Choctaw Counties.

Judge McCall was educated in the public schools of Choctaw County, attended Mt. Sterling Academy for three years, Cooper Institute at Daleville, Miss., and graduated from the University of Alabama with the degree of A. B., 1885. He finished at Commercial College, University of Kentucky, Lexington, 1886, and received the honorary degree of LL. B. from the University of Alabama on May 27, 1930. He taught for 10 years, was founder and editor of the Choctaw Advocate, Butler, 1890-1892, served as probate judge of Choctaw County, 1898-1909, was admitted to the bar, 1908. He was appointed by Governor Braxton Comer on November 1, 1909, as Examiner of Accounts, appointed by Governor O'Neal as Chief Examiner of Accounts, January 15, 1911, reappointed to this office January 1915, January 1919, January 1923, and January 1927. He was appointed Assistant Examiner in 1931, and Assistant Comptroller in January 1932. He was nominated for State Auditor without opposition in May, 1934. He was a Democrat, Methodist, Mason, Knight of Pythias, Woodman of the World, Elk, and a member of Sigma Nu College Fraternity.

Married: At Collinsville, Miss., Mary Rebecca, daughter of James Madison and Amanda (Etheridge) Collins, of Meridian, Miss. Children: 1. Charles Campbell, m. Nell Cave; 2. Willard, m. Lucy Sharpe; 3. Mary (McCall) Henderson.
