Ala. Treasurer Kay Ivey


Camden, Alabama, native Kay Ivey was sworn in by U.S. Congressman Jo Bonner and Supreme Court Justice Gorman Houston as the 38th Treasurer of the State of Alabama on January 20, 2003. Immediately following her election in November 2002, Kay participated in a conference for newly elected State Treasurers sponsored by the National Association of State Treasurers (NAST) in New York City where she took part in a "ringing of the closing bell" at the New York Stock Exchange.

A 1967 graduate of Auburn University, Kay was the first woman elected SGA Vice President and President of the SGA Senate. She was a member of the Gamma Delta Chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta, serving as president of her pledge class. Kay's career in education, banking, economic development and in higher education administration prepared her well to assume the duties of the Office of State Treasurer. She rose to the rank of Assistant Vice President during her 10 years with Merchants National Bank of Mobile (now Regions). She served as President, Alabama Young Bankers, Chairman, Education Committee of the Alabama Bankers Association which founded the Alabama Banking School of which she is a Charter Trustee and graduate. Ivey also completed the School of Bank Marketing at the University of Colorado, and served as a consultant to the American Bankers Association in Washington, DC, to launch the Economic Education Program for K-12 teachers and students nationwide.

Additionally, Kay served as Assistant Director of the Alabama Development Office, Reading Clerk of the Alabama House of Representatives, and the Director of Government Relations and Communications for the Alabama Commission on Higher Education for 13 years. She was appointed by Governors James, Hunt and Folsom to positions in state government, and she completed the Governor's Center for Public Policy at Duke University.

Active in civic organizations her entire life, Kay is a member of the Montgomery Rotary Club where she was the first woman to serve as Director and was recognized with the Paul Harris Award. She is also a member of the Business Council of Alabama, the Economic Developers Association, the Alabama Forestry Association, and she serves on the national speaker's staff of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She has long years of service with the Future Homemakers of America and the Future Farmers of America both of which have made her an honorary member.

Kay is honored to be the first Alabama Girls State alumnae elected to an Alabama Constitutional Office. She attended Girls State in 1962, was elected as Lieutenant Governor and represented Alabama at Girls Nation in Washington DC. Kay has remained involved with Girls State for the past 33 years and is passionate about encouraging young people to enter public service. According to Kay, "This state needs leaders with experience to serve effectively and the character to serve with honor. Each year I have the privilege to work with the young women who participate in Girls State and I renew my belief that our state has a bright future."

Kay is a member of the First Baptist Church of Montgomery, resides in Montgomery and is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. B.N. Ivey of Camden, Alabama, where she still maintains the family home.
