Annie Laurie Gunter
State Treasurer: 1978-1987


Annie Laurie Gunter of Montgomery, was born in North Carolina, June 23, 1919, daughter of Samuel Franklin and Daisy (Callahan) Cain. She attended public schools of Lake Wales, Florida, and was earlier employed by the Lake Wales public school system and private enterprise. Mrs. Gunter was appointed Coordinator of the Office of Highway and Traffic Safety in 1971 and Director of the Office of Consumer Protection in 1972 by Governor George C. Wallace. On June 13, 1978, she was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Treasurer, and was elected to a full term in the General Election of November 7, 1978. She was a delegate to the National Democratic Convention in 1972 and 1976 a member of the Platform Committee, and a member of the Alabama Democratic Executive Committee since 1974, and of the Montgomery County Democratic Committee. Mrs. Gunter is the widow of the late Dr. William A. Gunter, IV. She is a Presbyterian.
