George Washington Ellis State Treasurer: 1923-1927
George Washington Ellis was born at Orrville, Dallas County, March 10, 1863. He was the son of Moody Rollins and Nancy (Dunnaway) Ellis, and the grandson of Jeremiah Dunnaway. The former was a native of Georgia, and the Dunnaways were from Wilcox County in this State.
Mr. Ellis was educated at Orrville, Ala., in the crossroads school of the Orrville Academy. He served as State Treasurer, November 1896 to December 1900. On October 9, 1922 he was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Judge R. L. Bradley, deceased, and entered on his regularly elected term, January 16, 1923. He had served in the Treasurer's Office during other administrations.
He was a Democrat, a Baptist, and married on June 28, 1881 at Uniontown, Helen Anderson, daughter of Richard Paul and Mary Vernon (Jones) Anderson of Prairie Bluff, Ala.
Ellis died on March 6, 1942.
