Samuel Murphy Dunwoody, of Columbia, was born July 19, 1871, at Eufaula, Barbour County, Ala. He was the son of Samuel McLain and Margaret Murphy (Alford) Dunwoody, the former a native of Greenville, Tenn., who later removed to Eufaula and was a Captain in the Confederate Army. The paternal grandparents were Samuel M. and Elizabeth (Mosier) Dunwoody of Greenville, Tenn., and Wiley and Clarice (Fullmore) Alford, who lived at Fayetteville, N.C.

Mr. Dunwoody was educated in the public schools of Jackson County, Fla., and Columbia, Ala., and at Bingham School, Bingham, N.C. He was a member of the House of Representatives of the Alabama Legislature, 1923-1927, and was elected to the position of State Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries in 1926. He was by virtue of his office a member of the State Budget Commission under an act of Legislature in 1926.

He was married February 23, 1918, at Columbia, Ala., to Lenna Martha, daughter of William Stables and Mary Jane (Pearson) Denny of Milltown, Ala. Mr. and Mrs. Dunwoody adopted a daughter, a niece of the latter, Miss Frances Denny Dunwoody.

Dunwoody died on June 26, 1929.
