Mrs. Mabel (Sanders) Amos, Secretary of State, was born on June 3, 1900, in Brooklyn, Conecuh County, Alabama, daughter of James J. and Hattie (Bethea) Sanders; grandaughter of Isaac Monroe and Mary (Perdue) Sanders and of John Goodman and Viola (Rabun) Bethea, all of Conecuh County.

Mrs. Amos was educated in the public schools of her native town, attended Alabama College at Montevallo, State Teachers College at Troy, and Peabody College at Nashville, Tennessee, and received her business training at Massey Business College, Montgomery. She taught school in Brooklyn for a short period, after which she held a stenographic position in the State Tax Commission in 1931. In 1939 she was appointed secretary to the governor. Later promoted to recording secretary, she held that post in the administrations of Governors Frank M. Dixon, Chauncey Sparks, James E. Folsom, Gordon Persons, John Patterson and George C. Wallace. In the Democratic Pimary in 1966 she ran for the office of Secretary of State and was elected, being sworn in January, 1967.

In 1974 she was unsuccessful in her race against Melba Till Allen for the office of State Treasurer.

Mrs. Amos was a Democrat and a Baptist; a member of Zonta and also a member of the Business and Professional Womens Club.

Mabel Amos died on November 5, 1999.
