First Railroad in Alabama![]() The General Assembly of Alabama in 1830 chartered the first railroad in the state. Constructed over a two-year period, the Tuscumbia Railroad connected the town of Tuscumbia to a point on the Tennessee River (the site of present-day Sheffield), a distance of less than two miles.
